Donderdag 15 oktober 2015 Caucasia –
Medellin 288 km
Zelf weer eens ontbijt gemaakt en om
8.15 op de motor. De eerste 100 km gaan vlot. Langzaamaan rijden we
landschap.
We
wolken in rijden.
Daar is
We blijven zitten
man wordt aangeduwd.
is.
Maandag 19 oktober 2015 Popayan –
Ipialis 329 km
Vlak voor het vertrek zien we de
Duitsers. Zij vertrekken wat later in dezelfde richting. We beginnen
gevaarlijke rijders.
tanken.
even op zitten.

Caucasia – Medellin 125 mi
We make breakfast and start the bikes
at 8.15. The first 60 mi go smoothly. Then the mountains begin and we
see a lot of hoses from which water squirts up to 20 ft. It takes a
while before we figure out what it means. The people use the water
that is running from the mountains for a carwash. Men with red flags
wave to show that a truck is welcome. After our coffee break we are
entering a more mountainous area. Beautiful views from slopes in
which rivers stream and small villages which are built on
mountainsides. There are more curves, the tarmac is good and finally
the temperature drops so we are not sweating any more. There are many
freighttrucks and that means that we have to pass them. We rise to
almost 10,000 ft and get cold when riding through the clouds.
Striking is the number of soldiers we see. They have taken positions
at strategic points but also many are on transport. We wave and they
wave back. As soon as it begins to rain we shelter. As a precaution
we put on our raingear and that appears to be the right choice. It is
warmer for us and close to Medellin it begins to rain.
Medellin is a big city and in the days
of Pablo Escobar notorious for the number of drugskills. Now it is
totally different. There is a friendly lively vibe. We find a nice
hostel and in town we try to find the telemetro. The city is built
against mountains. There is a subway but to get to the higher parts
of the city there is a gondola lift. From the metro you jump in the
lift which gives you a nice view of the city when going up a couple
of stops. We don't go out because it rains and our tickets remain
valid. To make contact with a Colombian is easy. They are very
friendly and like to help you. The women are beautiful, somewhat
defiant and have a beaming smile.
The Swiss couple we know from the
Stahlratte arrives also in the hostel. With them we go to a
restaurant for a simple meal. While eating we talk about the trip and
the reasons for travelling. Simon tells he wants to understand the
world by travelling and studying history. Nice to hear and talk about
but we guess that Simon will be a good history teacher in a few
years. Later we update the blog while yawning. Time to go to sleep.

Medellin – Salento 151 mi
It takes time to get out of Medellin
but then there is a nice winding road. Nice to ride and make miles.
But then there begins the roadwork. So: wait and pass. When we stop
and ask for coffee then there is a “no hay” (we don't have).
Strange if you have driven through coffeefields for many miles. We
settle for a coke. They sell also small packages of wood. It seems
kindling-wood but the man of the restaurant tells us that the smoke
of the wood is good for your health. Mayby something for André who
has a tickling cough. Of course rain threatens but this time it is
fortunately not meant for us.
After the big city of Pereira (there is
no way around the center) we turn off the highway and drive into a
oasis of peace. A narrow winding road brings us to the touristic
village of Salento. At the hostel Tralala they have no room for us so
we head for the ecofarm La Serrana. We can camp but choose for the
comfort of a private room. This time with a shared bathroom. When
unpacking we see two adventureriders camping but that doesn't change
our mind. Just in time we can subscribe for dinner. When we look
around in the restaurant we see couples in their thirties, well
educated who love to hike. We eat all we get and when we are in our
room Harry updates the blog while André reads till he falls a sleep.
Saturday October 17th 2015 Salento 0 mi
A day of rest so work to do. After
breakfast we have a quick stroll to the marketplace where we arrive
at 9.29 to catch the jeep that leaves for the Valle de Cocora at
9.30. They have to start the jeep by pushing so we leave at 9.31.
When we arrive after a 20 minute drive it is clear that we would have
been better off riding our own bikes. It is cheaper, we wouldn't have
to wait to go back and it is all tarmac! Then we begin the 5 hours
hike through the mountains. It is clear where the trail is and the
only thing they have done is building a couple of small suspension
bridges. That gives the feeling that you are part of nature. After 1½
hour climbing we arrive (a bit) out of breath at the house of the
hummingbirds. Nice to see these birds. They are fast as lightning but
can also hover, weigh only a few grams and are beautiful coloured.
Hard to make good pictures of them so it is very nice when you
succeed. A racoon comes by and poses. We go on and climb for quite a
while. The last half hour of the climb is though. We gasp but that is
of course not due to our age but to the thin air at this height. When
we descend we see why the valley is famous. There are waxpalms which
reach the enormous height of 180 ft! Very special to see these trees
surrounded bij normal vegetation.
The jeep brings us back to the market
place. Meanwhile this place is transformed into a square with a lot
of foodstalls. It is cosy. We eat and look around. Then we walk back
to relax. André reads, tries to make his boots waterproof and cleans
his helmet. Harry goes to the main building to connect to the
internet. There he meets Petra and Anders, Swedish people living in
England. They are being partly sponsored for their trip around the
world and are travelling for 2½ years. They travel slowly so they
can spent a lot of time in a country and they have nice stories. In
Mumbay they drew so much attention that they were surrounded by a
crowd of people and couldn't move. The police intervened but did this
the hard way. Petra felt sorry for the ones which were beaten. Petra
tells that she frequently falls. She shows pictures of a
rivercrossing where she went under water. Petra, the bike and the
luggage all was wet. The water was in the front lamp and the
cilinders. With a hairdryer they dried the electronics and it worked
again. A nice couple. Also interested in other people and that is not
common with bikers. Honestly they answered that so long so many
experiences also gets normal. By the start is everthing awesome but
then you get used to it and decide not to visit a place that must be
beautiful. We walk back to the town and eat Italian food. On our way
back we feel our muscles and knees but had a great day.
Sunday October 18th 2015
Salento – Popayan 200 mi
Sometimes we have a dull day and this
is one of the few. A straight flat road to the south and it is hot.
When we stop for lunch at a shabby reataurant next to the road we get
a really nice lunch. A kind of paella with a lot of shrimps. We see
again many soldiers, very young and it is striking that they greet
all the cars by raising their thumb. We think it is pr, maybe because
of the peace negociations with the FARC.
When we reach Popayan we have to wait
for a trafficlight and see on the third floor of a hostel Frauke in
her underwear waving at us. Her husband Michael joins her and on the
balcony of an other room we see Matthias. We met on the Stahlratte,
wave back but are looking for an other address. We don't succeed and
later we also check in at the hostel of our German friends, but we
don't see them. Time for dinner and this time it is Italian (again),
but very good. A nice ending of a somewhat boring day.
Monday October 19th 2015
Popayan – Ipialis 206 mi
Just before we leave we meet the
Germans. They will leave later in the same direction as we. We begin
again with a dull road, but suddenly we are in the foothills of the
Andes and these are magnificent. We climb steadily and the
temperature drops. We reach 10,000 ft and the temperature drops from
95 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Beautiful views on green mountains
seperated by rivers. That is promising for the real Andes.
The drivers in the south of Colombia
are dangerous. Often they pass just before a sharp curve and
sometimes you think that there will be an accident.
Although the driver accelarates to pass
a truck but stays next to the truck in the curve and doesn't count at
all with a car coming from the other side. Sometimes it is close to
nothing and you slow down so that you can stop in time. André rides
in front when on his lane a bus approaches which overtakes a truck.
Fortunately there is just enough room on the right side to pass but
then the adrenalin must drop.
In Colombia motorcyclists don't have to
pay for the tollroad. At the tollbooth you drive on the right side of
the road. There is a gutter without barrier. The gutter is relatively
small and till now the sides were low, but suddenly the sides are
higher. When leaving the gutter we touch the side with the frame of
the panniers. André exceeds this. At a gutter with even higher sides
he touches halfway the side and can hardly hold his balance. The
frame of his pannier has to be welded. Harry has to stop in the
gutter and to get out he has to step with his feet on the sides while
driving slowly. Strange to see but it works.
In the crowded city of Ipialis we
search for a hostel, but despite we ignore one way streets – which
results in a lot of yelling – we can not find it. If we ask a man
he advises us to go to a better place. We do and end up in a really
nice hotel. We can stall the bikes in an underground parking and a 75
years old man brings our luggage to the room on the second floor
while we drink coffee at the reception. The hotel is cheap for what
it offers: luxury. The receptionist tells why it is so crowded in the
centre. Many Ecuadorians do their shopping in Colombia. Their money
is linked to the dollar and apparently the inflation is high in
Colombia. Our German friends have found a hotel nearby. We have
dinner with them and talk about all kind of stuff. Nice to have such
a contact once in a while.
Harry facetimes with Maarten his
youngest son who is having his birthday today.
Tomorrow we will leave Colombia and
again a country and its population has given us a lot of enjoyment
despite the many warnings for all kind of dangers. Mexico and
Nicaragua were the same story. It looks as if bad news is more
important than good news and that is a pity. These countries with
their people are beautiful and if you behave they can be travelled
easily. Go if you get the chance.
Tuesday October 20th 2015
Ipialis – Otavalo (Ecuador) 116 mi
André gets his papers for the border
out of the pannier, but unnoticed drops his key in it. In the room he
notices that he lost his key and search for it. But who is going to
look in the pannier? André after he checks all the other
possibilities. We leave later than planned and have to get fuel
first. A Colombian is very enthousiastic about the bikes and wants to
try one. That is allowed but you can hardly see him between the
luggage. He is radiating when we take a picture but he couldn't ride
a feet.
Then we visit the church of Las Lajas.
The travelguide mentions that this church is special because it is
built over a river. Indeed first they made a bridge and built the
church against the rock. So the church isn't really built over the
river, but it is beautifully renovated and the location is special.
After coffee we head for the border. There we meet again our German
forefront. To leave Colombia is easy. To enter Ecuador takes a lot of
time. But Otavalo is just 110 mi away and with a highway with six
lanes we arrive in time. Otavalo is known for its market with Indians
wearing hats. The hats we can find but not the market. We find a
hostel where the bikes can be parked inside. Harry manages to get the
bike in but damages the paint a little. André also leaves a mark on
the doorhandle.
In the friendly village, in which we
find the market easily, there is also a hostel run by the Dutch
Esther. There we eat deliciously. We don't see Esther but feel
welcome. Then in an other place we have a cup of coffee with
chocolatecake and a chat with the girl who works there. She takes a
picture of us for the facebookpage, see www.cunani.com).
So again a day passes.
Wednesday October 21th 2015 Otavalo –
Latacunga 218 mi
An early rise for a visit of the market
before we leave. We try to make pictures but the Indian women don't
like it. We have to take pictures when they are off guard. That is
easier while drinking coffee at the market. When we leave Otavalo
there is a beautiful road through high mountains. Only the roads are
so wide and comfortable that it gives the feeling that it is too
easy, but alright we don't know yet what is ahead of us so we enjoy
the comfort. After Quito the vulcano Cotopaxi of almost 20,000 ft
appears. Unfortunately the top is covered with clouds. The vulcano
became active in April and they fear an eruption, but for now it is
quiet. They have taken precautions for an evacuation of thousands of
people. We try to come closer but the National Park is closed. When
we stop and look around you can see that all is covered with grey
dust. Trees, ground, road, bridge all is grey. It looks a bit like an
abandonned battlefield.
We leave the highway for a visit of the
kraterlake and drive into a beautiful area. We rise to 12,000 ft and
there are very nice views. After 200 mi the lake appears and it is so
beautiful that you get a bit emotional. We take pictures and meet two
hippies. A boy from Argentina and a girl from France with rastahair.
They are travelling for years, now with three dogs. We drink maté
with them and they advice us to see the sunrise over the lake. They
are going to camp. To avoid a cold night we choose to drive back to
town and check in at an hostel where the average age is 25, go out
for dinner en after the adminstration is updated the lights go out.
